Process Paper
We decided amongst ourselves to conduct our project over drill team and the Kilgore College Rangerettes because drill team is a big part of both of our lives and is both of our passions. We have been dancing all of our lives and we thought it would be interesting to know where it evolved from. We both knew that drill team made a huge impact on our lives, as well as others. Drill team is not only a hobby and a sport, it is a performing art.
As soon as we decided that drill team would be our topic, we immediately started gathering research. At first, we looked on the internet and found as much as we could, but we knew we could find more. Therefore, we went to the Greenville Public Library and found newspaper articles and other information about Gussie Nell Davis and her contribution to the founding of drill team. We then decided to base our project upon Gussie Nell Davis and the Rangerettes. The Rangerettes were the first college drill team, but many people consider them to be the first ever. We watched a few videos about Gussie and her team which gave us a lot of information. We visited The American Cotton Museum in Greenville, Texas, which had a display on the Greenville drill team, the Flashes. We also visited the Rangerettes showcase museum in Kilgore, Texas which had outstanding information and pictures about the Rangerettes, Gussie Nell, and the other two directors. We plan on furthering our education by going to the Rangerette Revels Spring Show in April.
Considering that the website category was just introduced to our school this year, we decided to construct our project into a website. Before we started constructing our website, we knew we needed a plan. We imagined the website to be amazing and perfect. At first, we became overwhelmed and discouraged, but with a little motivation from our teacher, it eventually turned out to be just the way we wanted it.
After gathering all the information we did to construct our project, we learned that if it wasn’t for Miss Gussie Nell Davis finding drill team, there may not even be drill teams, or dance teams today. Drill team is not only a form of entertainment, it was also designed to keep fans from drinking underneath the bleachers during half-time and to give girls an opportunity of feminine athletics. Now-a-days, some fans only come to watch the drill teams perform. Drill team keeps young lady's from doing things like drinking alcohol, going to parties, and getting in trouble. It has made, and is still making little girls' dreams come true. There are also many scholarship opportunities for girls who plan on dancing in college. We think drill team motivates girls to want to do something extravagant in their lives. All because of Gussie Nell Davis, there are millions of dance and drill teams across the world.
